Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question certain rulings made by the official, echoing the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
