A man who laced sweets with sleeping medication and distributed them to children at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual offenses against two boys aged between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight children and one adult fell ill at Stathern Lodge in July.

The senior citizen, from the Nottinghamshire area, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he was present at the judicial center on recently.

Nevertheless, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

The defendant was kept in jail ahead of a further hearing on November 28th.

'Treat game'

The legal representative, prosecuting, described the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She explained his targets were under-privileged children who were attending a youth camp which he operated.

Ruben conducted a "candy game" with the children, the legal counsel stated, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to ingest treats "rapidly".

She stated to the judge the defendant had engaged in this activity with the children "repeatedly", and minors had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She explained Ruben had been capable of justifying this for many years as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had worries in summer 2025.

The legal representative continued: "In the summer" his family member had concerns about the activities, with valid cause.

"They chose" to have a look in the man's possessions."

Mrs Prior KC said materials including infant oil, Vaseline and syringes were discovered, and his stepchild contacted the authorities about his suspicions.

She said Ruben proceeded to conduct the "sweet game" with six boys that evening - July 26th - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that time," she added.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, had stated that it was examining the police response of the incident.

The prosecutor stated the minors were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the stepson notified the police again.

She said the man then engaged in the "candy game" in a room of five youngsters.
