Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
