A minimum of 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
